Details emerge on Cowboys WR KaVontae Turpin's arrest for marijuana, gun charges

More details emerged on Dallas Cowboys wide receiver KaVontae Turpin’s arrest for marijuana and gun charges. He was allegedly closing in on 100 mph with a gun in his backseat, per TMZ Sports.
The Allen Police Department pulled him over around 11:49 p.m. local time after Turpin was clocked at 97 mph in a 70 mph zone, per the report. An unholstered 9MM pistol was seen in the backseat and less than two ounces of weed were later found in the car’s center console.
Turpin was eventually booked on two misdemeanor charges: one count of possession of marijuana less than two ounces and one count of unlawful carrying of a weapon. The Dallas return man was released on bond.
Turpin is set to enter his fourth season with the Cowboys in 2025. He was a first-team All-Pro kick returner last year after returning 27 kickoffs for 904 yards and a touchdown.
The 5-foot-9, 153-pound plays wide receiver as his primary position. He logged 31 catches for 420 yards and two touchdowns for the Cowboys in 2024. It was the most productive season of the former TCU star’s career since joining the team in 2022.
He was the fourth-leading receiver for the team in 2024, and there was potential he could have slid into the WR3 role behind CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens after the departure of Brandin Cooks. Jalen Tolbert fell into that role last season, providing multiple capable receiving options for a healthy Dak Prescott this fall. It’s unclear how Turpin’s arrest will impact his playing time this season.

The Cowboys finished 7-10 last season following Dak Prescott’s season-ending injury. This came after Dallas finished with 12-5 records in each of the past three seasons. The Cowboys had made the playoffs in each of those seasons.
It was the first time the franchise did so since going six seasons in a row from 1991-1996. They won three championships during that stretch.
With Prescott back and healthy, the expectation is for Dallas to find itself right back in playoff contention and a team that can compete with its division rivals Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders this season. Both teams emerged as Super Bowl contenders while the Cowboys were forced to take a back seat with the Eagles eventually winning it all.
The Cowboys will get their shot to prove their worth against Philadelphia early this year. The two teams will kick the 2025 regular season on Thursday, Sept. 4 in a highly-anticipated matchup.
