More details on the death of former NFL running back Doug Martin have been provided by Brian Murphy, Martin’s former agent. Murphy offered his perspective on the matter, mentioning Martin’s battles with his mental health throughout his life.

He revealed the circumstances that led to his untimely passing, as well as clarifying the extent to which police were involved. Murphy released the statement on behalf of Martin’s family.

Murphy, who was Martin’s agent when he was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, said that mental health was the “one opponent from which Doug could not run.”

“Following recent media reports about Doug’s untimely passing, the family wishes to clarify the circumstances,” Murphy wrote, via his statement. “Doug’s parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support.

“Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police. An investigation into what transpired as he was detained is underway.”

Initial reports stated that Martin was arrested for alleged break-in at an Oakland home. Per the East Bay Times, Martin was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

Oakland Police said that officers were simultaneously told that the suspected burglar was going through a medical emergency. What’s described as “a brief struggle” then followed and the individual became unresponsive after being taken into custody. Paramedics would provide aid before he went to the hospital.

In addition, the police officers who were involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave. However, that is standard per department policy.

Fans will remember Martin for the success he enjoyed on the field. After being selected by Tampa Bay in 2012, he’d make an immediate impact during his rookie season, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns on 319 carries. Martin also caught 49 passes for 472 yards and one TD, and his production in 2012 led to him being selected to the Pro Bowl.

This came after a star-studded career playing for the Boise State Broncos. There, he rushed for 3,431 career yards and 43 career touchdowns. He also had 67 career receptions for 715 yards and four touchdowns. That’s still eighth all-time in Boise State program history for rushing yards and sixth in program history for rushing touchdowns.
