ESPN's Matt Miller gauges potential blockbuster trade between Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders for Caleb Williams

Ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, ESPN’s Matt Miller is speculating whether the Chicago Bears would listen to trade offers for the first overall pick.
One of the teams being mentioned is the franchise with the second overall pick, the Washington Commanders. Some believes Washington wants to draft Caleb Williams, and Miller is playing devil’s advocate for the Bears, explaining how it could work for Chicago if it were to go down.
“If you trade from No. 1 to No. 2, let Washington take Caleb Williams and you take Drake Maye, you’re going to get draft capital from Washington. You’re also going to turn around and trade Justin Fields for a second round pick,” Miller explained, via ESPN’s Get Up. “We saw Ryan Poles attempt to do this last year, so there’s precedent. They didn’t want to go from No. 1 to No. 9. They wanted to go from No. 1 to No. 2, and then restart the conversation about trading back one more time. It didn’t workout that way, but I do think there’s a conversation to be had.
“Those are going to pick up later this month at the NFL Combine of, What if we just go back to No. 2, and take Drake Maye? What could we get from Washington? Could we get a first rounder, plus a player like Jonathon Allen?”
So basically Miller is weighing the better of two options, simply picking Williams, or drafting North Carolina’s Drake Maye, and pairing him with immense draft capital. The Bears have to weigh which future they’d prefer.
Time will tell what Chicago decides to do, but it’s evident we’re far from settled when it comes to the first overall pick, and there’s a myriad of teams interested in moving up.
Adam Schefter hints at Commanders interest in Caleb Williams after hiring Kliff Kingsbury
Continuing, the Washington Commanders made a big splash on Sunday, hiring former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury as the team’s new offensive coordinator under Dan Quinn. After being in line for the Raiders’ offensive coordinator job, Kingsbury seemingly flipped his choice to the Commanders, who happen to own the No. 2 pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.

The former Texas Tech head coach is coming off of a one-year stint as an analyst at USC, where he worked with 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams at quarterback. Williams is speculated to be the possible No. 1 pick in the draft for the Bears, but with Kingsbury’s hiring in D.C., the new buzz is about how the Commanders might acquire the first overall selection to nab the Trojans star.
“Let the speculation begin: Kliff Kingsbury coached Caleb Williams last season,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted on Sunday. “Williams was a standout QB at Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C. The Commanders currently hold the No. 2 overall pick and are in striking distance of the No. 1 pick that belongs to Chicago.”
Either by Chicago choosing not to take Williams or by trading down with the Commanders for pick No. 1, Washington could end up with their quarterback of the future. The Bears will have to make a definitive decision on Justin Fields‘ future before then.
The Trojans quarterback learned of the news about his former coach and took to his Instagram story to offer his congratulations. He posted a photo of the news along with the caption, “my dawg congrats.”
