He made his name as a football player at Notre Dame, but Cole Kmet also has baseball in his blood as a former Fighting Irish baseball player. So it’s not surprising to see him hitting home runs at Wrigley Field on Thursday.

The Chicago Bears spent the day at Wrigley, home of the Cubs, and Kmet was among the group to take batting practice. That’s when he hit one into the bleachers, and his teammates — understandably — went crazy.

Kmet pitched for Notre Dame in 2018 and 2019 before an elbow injury turned his focus solely to football. In his two seasons with the Fighting Irish, Kmet had a 2-7 record with a 4.43 ERA and also went 1-for-3 at the plate during the 2018 season.

But football was his game, and he starred for Notre Dame from 2017 to 2019. As a junior in 2019, he had 515 receiving yards and six touchdowns for the Fighting Irish before entering the 2020 NFL Draft. Chicago selected him as the No. 43 overall pick, and he’s played the last two years with the Bears.

During his time in the NFL, Kmet has totaled 855 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He’s gearing up for year three with Chicago and his second year with quarterback Justin Fields — who also got in on the batting practice fun on Thursday.

Justin Fields shows off strength, hits home run at Wrigley Field

Justin Fields: Two-sport athlete? He sure looked the part Thursday as the Chicago Bears took batting practice at Wrigley Field.

Fields hit a home run into the left field bleachers — and his teammates reacted accordingly. Running back Khalil Herbert captured the moment on video, and it was as awesome as you’d expect.

The Bears were able to use the stadium because the Cubs are in New York getting ready for a series against the Yankees. It’s unclear if the Cubs have reached out about asking Fields to suit up and help out as they take on a powerful Yankees lineup.
