The San Francisco 49ers are working out former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book on Tuesday, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

The Philadelphia Eagles waived Book at the end of August. He spent the 2022 season with the team after starting his career with the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints drafted Book in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame, but he only appeared in one game with the team. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 135 yards and threw two interceptions that day — his lone NFL start.

The Saints waived Book ahead of the 2022 season, opening the door for the Eagles to claim him. He didn’t appear in a regular season game for Philadelphia.

In two preseason games this year, Book threw for 91 yards on 12 of 19 passing. He also took six carries for 31 yards. He saw most of his action in the finale against the Indianapolis Colts on Friday when he went 11 for 15 for 80 yards in the 27-13 loss.

Ian Book played five years at Notre Dame from 2016-20 and took over the starting quarterback job during the 2018 season. His biggest season came in 2019 when he threw for 3,034 yards and 34 touchdowns to help the Fighting Irish to an 11-2 record. As a senior in 2020, Book threw for 2,830 yards and 15 touchdowns before heading to the NFL.

The 49ers currently don’t have a quarterback on the practice roster. The three quarterbacks on the roster now are Brock Purdy, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen. They parted ways with former first-rounder Trey Lance via trade to the Cowboys before the start of the season.

49ers to ramp up Nick Bosa after Week 1

After reaching an agreement with Nick Bosa last week, the edge rusher played 35 snaps for the defense on Sunday against the Steelers. It was an impressive feat given how recently he rejoined the team.

Heading into a Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan shared the plan is to let Bosa fully recover and then determine how much he’ll play.

“I know he got 35 plays. He was full on those,” Shanahan said. “He played like he was full go. We just wanted to take into account recovery. We’re really happy to be able to get a win and play the way we did by reaching the play counter not exceeding the part that we had planned on.

“He’ll spend these two days recovering. I’m sure he’s going to be sore today and sore tomorrow from doing that. Hopefully, he’ll be fresh enough to come out and start getting into practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.”
