Former Washington DL Jason Buck calls for President Donald Trump to bring Redskins team name back

For nearly a century, the pro football team in Washington D.C. went by one moniker — the Redskins. Facing widespread criticism for years regarding the name, the franchise dropped the tag after the 2020 season and ultimately opted to be called the Commanders beginning in 2022.
One Washington alumnus, Jason Buck — who won a Super Bowl with the franchise in 1991 — is advocating for the name to be restored. He wants to send the issue all the way up to United States President Donald Trump. He’s already penned a letter to the President on the subject matter and revealed what he’d tell him directly if given the opportunity.
“Just stand with us and stand for common sense and help us,” Buck told TMZ Sports. “Help me bring the Redskin people back in, completely into the fold of the United States, so we can fix their system and have them enjoy the exact principles of the Constitution given to us by God and our founding fathers … Let’s, let’s make sure that our Redskin brothers that helped build this nation have the same exact opportunities and blessings.
“I would give anything to be with President Trump and discuss this. We have got to come back to normalcy and just normal American life where, you know, we put those things aside. We love each other.”
Buck pointed toward the work done by the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA), which has come together for what he describes as the “eradication of the Indian name.” NAGA even has a web page calling out what they feel is a misconception that the ‘Redskin’ name is racist.

Moreover, Buck says he’s not the only Washington alum who is upset with the name change. He called it “devastating.”
“You know, it’s like your grandma passed away, and your grandpa marries a new woman,” he said. “And she comes in and takes all the pictures out of the house and puts hers up. It’s like you just lost your family. … It didn’t make sense.”
While Buck believes the letter he wrote to President Trump likely got lost in the shuffle. Still, it isn’t stopping him from keeping the fight going to restore the former name of Washington’s NFL team.
“It’s Americana and we deserve to have our proud traditions maintained,” Buck said. “We go to those football stadiums and become one. No Democrat, no Republican, no Catholic, no Baptist. We’ll come in there as Americans for the American sporting event and be a proud Redskin.”
