George Pickens takes shot at Steelers offense after first day of Cowboys training camp

George Pickens is one training camp practice into his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys. He wasted no time taking a shot at his former club — the Pittsburgh Steelers — while speaking to the media Tuesday.
Asked about being used as a more complete receiver as opposed to just the downfield threat he was in Pittsburgh, Pickens said, “Yeah, I’m definitely excited to run better plays, for sure.” Pickens added he felt he needed a “fresh start” after three seasons in Pittsburgh. Entering a contract year playing alongside an All-Pro wideout in CeeDee Lamb, Pickens sees an opportunity to show off his full set of skills — more so than he did in Pittsburgh.
Dallas acquired Pickens and a 2026 sixth-round pick from Pittsburgh in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Pickens appeared in 14 games last season as he missed some time with an injury.
During that time, he hauled in 59 receptions for 900 yards and three touchdowns as a key piece of the Steelers’ passing attack. That came after an impressive second year in the NFL in 2023 when he had a career-high 1,140 yards and five touchdowns. His 18.1 yards per reception led the league that season.

George Pickens: Cowboys ‘could be great’ in 2025
His stay in Pittsburgh was turbulent at times. Pickens has arrived for games and meetings later than requested by coaches, as well as arguing with fans during games. But when he’s on the field, there’s no questioning Pickens’ talent.
With Pickens aboard, the potential is there for him and Lamb to form one of the league’s most dangerous receiving duos. Sure, you might say Pickens is WR2 behind Lamb. But Lamb believes both are 1s and will present unique challenges to opposing defenses. It’s only been a day, but Pickens sees big potential in the Cowboys’ offense in 2025.
“I think it could be great,” Pickens said. “Today is the first day, but long as we keep working and the camaraderie, I feel like it’s no choice but to be great.”
