George Pickens trade: New details emerge on potential contract extension

George Pickens will play out the final season of his rookie contract with the Dallas Cowboys. Three years were spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers but a big-time trade went down on Wednesday. Immediately, one of the questions for Dallas now becomes, can they sign Pickens for a long-term extension?
If the answer is yes, we will apparently not find out in the near future. According to DLLS’s Clarence Hill, Pickens is not looking to sign a new deal at night. His goal is to go out and prove himself during the 2025 season.
“Per source on the need for a possible contract extension following the trade, new Cowboys WR George Pickens isn’t ‘looking to do one. Wants to show he’s a top guy this year,’” Hill said via X.
The lack of urgency regarding contract extensions has been a recent theme in Dallas. Although, based on Hill’s report, Pickens would be the one holding up any kind of negotiations. He is set to become a free agent once the 2025 season is over, potentially hitting the open market. Doing so after a season filled with success appears to be the plan.
If there is a downside to potential contract negotiations, it might fall between the Cowboys’ front office and Pickens’ agent. The wide receiver is represented by David Mulugheta, the same agent used by Micah Parsons. Jerry Jones has recently been in the headlines over comments made about Mulugheta.

“Soon-to-be Cowboys WR George Pickens is heading into the last year of his contract and will want a new deal,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said via X. “His agent happens to be David Mulugheta, whose name Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he did not know while talking about a new deal for Micah Parsons, another Mulugheta client.”
George Pickens hoping to fit into Dallas Cowboys offense nicely
Pickens has been a productive player in Pittsburgh despite the Steelers going through a carousel of quarterbacks throughout his career. In 48 games, Pickens has caught 174 passes for 2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The 2024 season was good for 59 receptions for 900 yards and three scores. Numbers Dallas would certainly take as a second wide receiver, maybe wanting a few more touchdowns to the resume.
The Cowboys are already paying big-time money to CeeDee Lamb. But Dak Prescott does need a downfield weapon who can go win the ball. Pickens should have a good role inside Brian Schottenheimer’s offense waiting for him in Dallas.
