The Green Bay Packers are signing former Notre Dame running back Dexter Williams, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson. The Packers worked out five running backs on Tuesday, leading to the signing of Williams on Wednesday.

The sixth-round draft pick now returns to the squad after receiving his release last preseason. Along with Williams, Green Bay had Jaylen Samuels of NC State, Kalen Ballage of Arizona State, Stevie Scott of Indiana and Calvin Turner of Hawaii at the facility on Tuesday.

During the offseason, Dexter Williams played in the USFL. He last put up 102 total yards for the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL final.

Packers bring back Dexter Williams

Dexter Williams finished his college career in South Bend with 1,636 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. He had an additional 162 yards through receptions and a pair of touchdowns through the air. After his career there ended, the Seattle Seahawks drafted him 194th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was then traded to Green Bay.

Williams rushed just seven times over seven appearances in two seasons with the Packers. He then jumped from practice squads in New York with the Giants to Miami with the Dolphins. His last official spot in the NFL was last season with the Cleveland Browns.

With Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon in Green Bay’s RB1 and RB2 spots, this could end the search depth in the backfield. Former Mississippi State star Kylin Hill is on the PUP list. The Packers open the preseason this week with a game against San Francisco.
