The bizarre trend of green sex toys being thrown onto the playing surface has extended beyond the WNBA and into the NFL. Video emerged on social media of a referee picking up an object that had been thrown on the field during a game between the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

The referee tossed the object, which upon zooming in was revealed to be a green sex toy, to the sideline and got back to officiating the game. You can view the moment below.

It’s unclear at this time whether the person who threw the sex toy was identified. But it only adds to the strange sequence of events that started a little more than a month back.

The trend began on July 29 when the first sex toy was thrown onto the court in a WNBA matchup between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream. Valkyries guard Tiffany Hayes hoisted a 3-point shot, and it was blocked by the Dream’s Maya Caldwell. As Golden State collected the rebound, a lime green object flew from the stands and hit harmlessly near the free-throw line.

Most were shocked upon discovering what it was and figured it would be a one-time event. However, that would not be the case as three days later, another sex toy interrupted a game between the Valkyries and Chicago Sky.

That wouldn’t be the last time either as sex toys were later thrown at multiple other WNBA games. Police later arrested Delbert Carver, 23, of Marietta, Georgia, for allegedly throwing a green sex toy at the Atlanta Dream’s home game vs. the Phoenix Mercury on Aug. 1. Carver also confessed to throwing the first sex toy at the game between the Dream and Valkyries.

The sex toy throwing trend was later reported by ESPN to be a stunt by a group of investors meant to market a new crypto coin. It’s unclear whether the sex toy thrown at Sunday’s NFL contest is related to that.

Regardless, it was yet another strange distraction in Week 1 of the NFL season. We’ll have to wait to see whether any more incidents like this are to follow as the season goes on. But expect secruity to be on guard over the next few weeks after this.

There’s still a couple more NFL games this week to be on the lookout for, beginning with Sunday night’s matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens. The Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings will then close things out in a Monday Night Football matchup.
