A career first for Harrison Burton! He claims his first NASCAR Xfinity Series pole award and leads the field to green at Martinsville. This comes on the same day that Sam Hunt Racing announced Burton will race full-time for the organization in a second car for 2026.

A big day all around for Harrison Burton. 2026 plans announced, he earns the pole, and now, there is only one thing left to do – win.

Back in 2020, Burton won the fall Martinsville race. Can he win another grandfather clock this time around?

Earlier this season, the Xfinity Series got into a bit of trouble at Martinsville. NASCAR stepped in afterward and warned the series to get it together. Since then, outside of a few random incidents, the field as a whole has been respectful on the race track. At least, not to the extent they were wrecking each other in the Spring.

Going into this weekend, NASCAR will expect everyone to be on their best behavior. Harrison Burton has a line of playoff cars behind him. Connor Zilisch did not qualify after taking damage to his car in practice. So, he will have one heck of a day racing from the rear. Full qualifying results below:

Looking at the field, you have to be concerned about Aric Almirola if you are another playoff driver hoping to win this race and win your way to Phoenix. Almirola is racing for the Owners’ Championship in the 19 car. He is looking to win Coach Gibbs a championship. On top of that, he’s fantastic at Martinsville. It will be difficult to beat him tonight.

Harrison Burton moving back to Toyota

While Harrison Burton has been in the Ford family for the last several years, he found most of his early success as a Toyota driver. So, going back to TRD in 2026 with Sam Hunt Racing appears to be a logical decision. He has sponsorship and SHR is a team on the rise.

I think that the team dynamic will have to play out. Can Dean Thompson accept taking a co-pilot position at Sam Hunt or even a backseat to Burton? Because on paper, Harrison should be the top driver at that organizaiton. He has Cup experience and has won in the Xfinity Series before.

Sam Hunt, like AM Racing, is still developing as an organization. However, I’d argue that they are in a better position with Toyota and are a bit more of a mature and seasoned team than AMR. Does that mean the results will improve immediately with Burton behind the wheel? No, but the potential to do some great things is going to be there.

Harrison Burton on pole tonight. He gets AM Racing a pole before they part ways at the end of the season. Can he earn the organization its first win?
