Now that the Houston Texans have agreed upon a trade deal with the Cleveland Browns for quarterback Deshaun Watson, the Texans CEO and general manager have each released statements on the move. After over a year since demanding a trade, Watson is on his way to Cleveland to compete for the AFC North crown on a historic $230 million contract, fully guaranteed. The orchestrator of this trade Nick Caserio had this to say about the deal.

“Earlier today we agree to trade Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns. I felt it was the right move for our organization as we head into the new league year focused on building our roster for the 2022 season,” wrote Texans general manager Nick Caserio. “Our priority right now is adding talented players to the foundation we have already put in place over the last 15 months and this trade supports that plan. As we navigate through the rest of the offseason, we remain open minded to all avenues that allow us to improve our roster and add to our program.”

Reports last year linked Watson’s dissatisfaction with the Texans stemming from the hiring process used to bring in Caserio. Watson requested to offer input on the potential general manager hiring before the hiring of Caserio. But not only did the Texans consult or consider their former franchise quarterbacks’ suggestion, but they also did not inform him of their intention to hire Caserio.

Texans CEO McNair praises the trade

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Texans chair and chief executive officer, Cal McNair released a statement as well, praising his general manager.

“I’m extremely proud of the way Nick Caserio navigated us through this challenging situation. He remained patient before ultimately making the decision that was best for us in both the short and long term. We’re confident in our plan to build a championship program that can sustain success and our entire organization is excited to move forward together,” said McNair.

The Texans were able to get quite the haul back for their disgruntled quarterback. According to reports, the Browns are sending Houston three first-round picks and two second-round picks for Watson. Cleveland will also get a fourth-round pick in the deal.
