The Hungarian Boxing Association (HBA) has reportedly lodged a protest of Anna Luca Hamori‘s quarterfinal bout with Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who has been the subject of intense scrutiny over gender-related concerns.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has backed Khelif’s eligibility, which came into question thanks to gender testing administered by the International Boxing Association (IBA) that ruled Khelif ineligible for the 2023 world championships.

Khelif beat Hamori handily on points in a unanimous decision on Saturday.

Following the fight, USA Today reported that the HBA is lodging a protest of the match with Imane Khelif, with a Hungarian boxing official saying: “consequences must be carefully evaluated after the Games.”

The IOC was not aware of a protest at the time of the USA Today report.

Khelif was moved to tears after the match, with her coach screaming, “They bullied her” and “Long live Algeria.” Khelif was ushered away from the ring while sobbing, at times sheltered by team officials and then later draped in the Algerian flag.

Her opponent during the Saturday match, Hamori, had leaned into the controversy by reposting several offensive Instagram and TikTok stories related to Imane Khelif’s gender.

Imane Khelif is not transgender and has identified as a woman since birth. Her passport — the document used by the IOC to determine her eligibility — reflects as much.

However, the controversy stemming from the IBA’s decision in 2023 has persisted at the Olympic Games, making life difficult on Khelif. And now there are reports that her results may be formally contested.

With the win, Khelif advanced to the semifinals, where she will be guaranteed an Olympic medal. The sport awards two bronze medals to participants.

Whatever happens, all eyes will be on Imane Khelif moving forward.
