With what all has taken place in Ja Morant’s life over the last few months, it’s not a far stretch to say that the almost 24 year old could use some guidance. However, it sounds as though he’s not interested in hearing any from Skip Bayless and, in turn, rapper Lil Wayne.

During an episode of ‘The Skip Bayless Show’, Bayless said Lil Wayne reached out to him and that the two of them tried to get connected with Morant in order for the five-time Grammy winner to offer advice. Unsurprisingly, Morant didn’t respond to the offer which subsequently led Bayless to hope that the All-Star hasn’t completely thrown on the blinders when it comes to those outside his inner circle.

“(Lil Wayne) texted me. He said, ‘Hey, can you connect me with Ja? Because I could help him. I’ve been there. I’ve done all this. I wound up in prison. Rikers Island. I know what happens. I know where you can go wrong and I know what’s right’. (And) I said I’ll try,” Bayless said. “I reached out to Ja. ‘Would you sit with Lil Wayne? Would you talk to Lil Wayne?’ Wayne would fly to him. He’d fly to Memphis in a heartbeat, tonight. Wayne would private plane it and go right to Memphis if he thought he could save a career and a soul.”

“I got nothing back from Ja. (I) didn’t expect anything back,” said Bayless. “In the end, I just hope Ja doesn’t turn out to be one of those people you just can’t reach. (That) you just can’t fix, you just can’t save.”

In 2007, Lil Wayne pled guilty to attempted possession of a weapon that was onboard his tour bus. That eventually led to a one year sentence, one which he only served eight months of, at Rikers Island. Then, in 2020, he was charged with a count of possessing a firearm and ammunition as a felon and faced up to a decade in jail before he was pardoned.

Morant has been in very similar situations considering his behavior over the course of the NBA season. The two most notable ones were the pair of Instagram Live streams that featured him waving a gun around. The first led to an eight-game suspension from the NBA in March while we’re still awaiting the latest on what the punishment for the second will be now that the NBA Finals are over.

Bayless isn’t exactly the most popular media member, especially among professional athletes. Still, credible or not, his intent was in the right place as all anyone seems to want to do for Morant is to help him make better choices for the sake of his career and life.
