Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter underwent surgery this past Monday on both of his shoulders, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. He is out for this Monday’s Week 14 road game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Carter is considered week-to-week. The 24-year-old has been dealing with shoulder issues for much of the season and was far from disruptive in the Black Friday defeat to the Chicago Bears. Carter took responsibility for his play in a game in which Philadelphia allowed 281 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He declined to reveal if he was dealing with an injury.

“It’s my problems to deal with,” Carter said. “I ain’t gonna tell everybody what I’m going through.”

The Eagles are different team without Jalen Carter

Carter, 24, has compiled 32 tackles (20 solo), four tackles for loss, two sacks and six PBUs this season. Philadelphia’s defense has struggled without Carter on the field. According to Tim McManus of ESPN, opponents’ yards per rush is 4.2 with Carter on the field, 5.1 when he is off. The Eagles’ sack percentage drops from 6.1% to 2.6% when Carter is on the sidelines.

Shoulder issues have been a problem for Carter before the season even began. He missed three training camp practices and said after the Week 2 win over the Kansas City Chiefs that he had a stinger. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said the following this week of Carter:

“He does have a shoulder issue,” Fangio said. “He has been playing with it. Late in the game, he had a great play with it, but it’s definitely something there.”

With Carter out, Philadelphia will rely on Moro Ojomo and Jordan Davis in his absence. The latter is having a career year with 49 total tackles and three sacks.
