New York Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka has officially ruled out quarterback Jaxson Dart for their game against the Detroit Lions this Sunday. Dart will miss his second consecutive game, as he remains in concussion protocol.

Quarterback Jameis Winston is now in line to make his second consecutive start for the Giants. Last Sunday, Winston completed 19-of-29 passes for 201 yards in a 27-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He tossed an interception and also rushed for a one-yard touchdown.

It’s been a tumultuous season for the New York Giants, who now sit at 2-9. They have lost five consecutive games since upsetting the Philadelphia Eagles 34-17 on Oct. 9.

Dart suffered his concussion on the Giants’ final drive of the third quarter against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 9. Before leaving the game, the rookie was having a standout performance. He had completed 19-of-29 pass attempts for 242 yards. Moreover, Dart had recorded 66 yards and two touchdowns on just six rushing attempts.

With the rushing scores, Dart became the first QB in NFL history to record a rushing touchdown in five consecutive games. On the play where the injury occurred, Dart’s helmet nearly came off as he was tackled by multiple Bears defenders.

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson replaced Dart following his injury, but struggled once again. Wilson completed just 3/7 passes for 45 yards, leading to Winston getting the nod as the starter the following week. Winston, a veteran quarterback in his own right, opened the season as New York’s QB3 but has found himself as the starter just a little over mid-way through the season.

“I’m so grateful, man,” Winston said postgame. “I am so grateful. I really wanted to win for these guys. We dominated the line of scrimmage and ran the ball effectively. We did some good things in the passing game. (Mike Kafka) did an incredible job calling this game and I really wanted to get the win for us.”

With another week of rest under his belt, Dart should be on track to return for New York’s Week 13 game against the Patriots in New England next Monday night. This game will pit two young stars at the quarterback position, Jaxson Dart and Drake Maye, against each other in the national spotlight.
