The Washington Commanders are ready to compete in the NFC this season. To do that, they’ll need rising star Jayden Daniels to be available at quarterback. Unfortunately, for the time being, that’s up in the air for their next game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

During an appearance on Get Up on the Thursday morning before the game, NFL insider Adam Schefter shared the latest on Jayden Daniels. Unfortunately, he still hasn’t been able to practice and is looking to get back on the field by the end of the week. Despite that, his status is still up in the air.

“Jayden Daniels did not practice yesterday,” Schefter said. “He’s not going to practice today. The team says the earliest he will practice is Friday. My understanding is Jayden Daniels is pushing to play. There are others who don’t want him to be out there.”

Following last Thursday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers, Daniels underwent an MRI on his knee. That would, ultimately, be diagnosed as a sprained knee. So, the Commanders avoided any major injury. However, in the short term, there was still the chance he could miss some time. Since then, it’s been a battle to get back on the practice field.

If Jayden Daniels is unable to play, Washington will turn to long-time backup Marcus Mariota. He’s now in his second season with the Commanders, but has not started a game with the team. His last start came back in 2022 with the Atlanta Falcons.

“We’ll see how this unfolds,” Schefter said. “It certainly feels like it’s trending a little bit toward Marcus Mariota right now, but, again, the Friday practice will go a ways to determining when Daniels will be back.”

Jayden Daniels helped get Washington to the NFC Championship as a rookie in 2024. Now, he’s started 2025, completing 59.7 percent of passes for 433 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 85 yards. That’s a talent that the Commanders need on the field, but it’s not one that head coach Dan Quinn wants to rely on until he knows Daniels is completely healthy.

“It starts off first on the strength, the movements,” Dan Quinn said, per ESPN. “Then, on the fiel,d change direction, the pivoting, the moving, all of those would be the things to go. So, we’ll just take it as it goes through the week, but he’d have to see all of the steps along this week to hit those marks. The speed, the stopping, the change of direction, all of it.”

Washington is set to host Las Vegas on Sunday, September 21st. Kickoff is scheduled to be part of the 1:00 p.m. EST slate.
