Jaylen Wright injury update: Mike McDaniel reveals Miami Dolphins RB underwent surgery ahead of Week 1

Just one week before the Miami Dolphins open their 2025 season on the road against the Indianapolis Colts, they got some bad news. The Dolphins’ running back room has taken a sudden hit.
Second-year running back Jaylen Wright had a “small procedure” done that isn’t season-ending but will take some time to recover from, Miami head coach Mike McDaniel revealed on Thursday. In response, the organization has signed veteran running backs Jeff Wilson and JaMychal Hasty as depth pieces.
Wright rushed for 19 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries in two of Miami’s three preseason games. As a rookie last season, the former Volunteer rushed for 249 yards on 68 attempts.
Wright was a four-star recruit coming out of Southern (Durham, NC) in the Class of 2021, where he was tabbed the No. 373-ranked player in the country. He committed to Tennessee, where he’d play from 2021-23. As a Volunteer, he totaled 368 carries for 2,297 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was named Second Team All-SEC in 2023.

Wright was instrumental in Tennessee‘s phenomenal 2022 season, in which it peaked at No. 1 in the country following four consecutive wins over top-25 FBS teams (No. 21 Florida, No. 24 LSU, No. 2 Alabama and No. 20 Kentucky). As a sophomore, Wright found pay dirt 10 times and rushed for 875 yards.
He was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the No. 120 pick in the Fourth Round of the 2024 NFL Draft and has remained with the organization since. Wright was set to have a featured role alongside De’Von Achane this season, but that has since been dashed.
Miami is coming off a disappointing season, in which it finished 8-9 and missed the AFC Playoffs. It marked the first losing season for the franchise since the 2019 season.
