With William Byron’s victory at Texas, Hendrick Motorsports now has 300 wins in the NASCAR Cup Series. Jeff Gordon is to thank for 93 of those. Of course, he had a teammate during his career that was able to win a lot of races as well, Jimmie Johnson.

Hendrick Motorsports almost collapsed before it really got off the ground. However, through perseverance and hard work, it is around today. As the winningest organization in Cup Series history, Hendrick is still breaking records.

Jeff Gordon got to see William Byron earn win 300 in the 24 car. That, along with all that HMS means to the four-time champion, made for a special moment last week.

“What I love about this experience and getting ready and hopefully achieving this huge moment for Hendrick Motorsports, is just the reminiscing about going back and where it all started,” Gordon said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “So, when I came to Hendrick Motorsports, we had 32 wins, I think in 93 I believe, Ricky Rudd won the 32nd win, so that was my rookie year. So now 300 is pretty insane, so it makes me feel really old but at the same time just seeing the different groups of drivers that have contributed, how many, before I got there as well as since I’ve been there it’s a lot of fun to be a part of this journey.”

Jeff Gordon helped to define an era of NASCAR. He was the young guy that battled with the likes of Dale Earnhardt. His victories and championships will live on for a lifetime and then some.

Hendrick Motorsports didn’t just have one multi-time champion, though.

Jeff Gordon on Jimmie Johnson’s impact on HMS

For many year, Gordon had a teammate in Jimmie Johnson. The 24 and 48 cars were the class of the field for many years, off and on at times. You really can’t argue with 176 wins and eleven championships, can you?

Jeff Gordon knows that Johnson deserves just as much credit for these 300 wins.

“I was looking at it the other day, I mean we’ve got all kinds of ways that we want to celebrate this,” Gordon continued. “We’ve got the 40th anniversary coming up next year that we now get to celebrate the 500 engine wins, the 300 team wins. You start to look at the list of different drivers and you know, you look at what happened when Jimmie Johnson came on board and what really the two of us were able to do throughout our careers and added to Hendrick Motorsports. So it’s I’m at 93 and he’s at 83. I think next next is Chase Elliott, I believe at 18. It’s obviously, the seven championships by Jimmie and the four by the 24 team and myself clearly had a lot to do with the history of Hendrick and I’m extremely proud of that.”

So, Chase Elliott is third on the list all-time. With the way William Byron is driving lately, that might not last very long. Let’s not forget that Kyle Larson is at HMS long-term. We might not have a teammate battle like Johnson and Gordon, we might have a third driver in the mix this time.

Hendrick Motorsports continues its legacy of performance. And Jeff Gordon is still very much a part of that success.
