Dallas Cowboys (2-2-1) owner/general manager Jerry Jones appeared to give the middle finger to New York Jets (0-5) fans during his team’s 37-22 Week 5 victory on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Jones on Tuesday said flipping off fans was not his intention.

Apparently, Jones was looking to give a thumbs up to the sea of Cowboys fans below him. Obviously, it didn’t quite go down that way.

“That was unfortunate,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans out front. It was right after we made our last touchdown. I put up the wrong show of hand. The intention was thumbs up.”

Though he claims it was a slip-up, the NFL has come down hard on things like this before. In 2009, former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was fined $250,000 after he was seen raising his middle fingers toward Buffalo Bills fans from his suite. Two seasons ago, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink on a Jacksonville Jaguars fan following a 26-0 defeat.

Cowboys’ offense stays hot in big win over Jets

Ultimately, that’s for the league to handle. Jones, meanwhile, has to love what he’s seeing on the field currently from his Cowboys. Coming off a 40-40 tie in Week 4 against the Green Bay Packers, Dallas put up another dominant offensive performance in the win over the Jets.

The Cowboys posted 416 total yards, and quarterback Dak Prescott continued to play like a frontrunner for the league MVP. He completed 18-of-29 passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns, doing it all without star wideout CeeDee Lamb and four starters along the offensive line. Dallas has the No. 1 offense in football through the first five games of the 2025 season.

“It’s credit to these coaches, it’s credit to the players, it’s credit to the organization and everybody,” Prescott said. “There are not many teams in the league that can put four guys who don’t start into the game and feel confident about going and winning the game, especially on the road.”
