After a trying year or so, Trey Lance can rest a little easier tonight. He’ll reportedly make the 53-man roster for the Dallas Cowboys.

Owner Jerry Jones revealed that news on Tuesday, according to a report from The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

It comes after an up-and-down few months for Trey Lance, in which his accuracy has been questioned and he’s undergone some significant growth with the team. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing

“These are things we need to work on,” coach Mike McCarthy said of Lance’s accuracy following a recent preseason game. “Trying to get as much as I can with him. You want to see him running the offense at a high level. The footwork and some of the things we’re asking him to do conceptually are new.

“We just need work. We just need as much time as we can. I know I say that every time I talk about him, but he’s making good progress. He’s definitely wired the right way. He’s a great athlete. Just a lot of work to do.”

Trey Lance will get that time to work things out with the Cowboys if he does indeed make the 53-man roster, as Jones said he would.

The former first-round pick, the No. 3 overall selection by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, did not throw a pass in an NFL game last year. In two seasons for San Francisco he went 56-of-102 passing (54.9%) for 797 yards and five touchdowns, but with three interceptions.

He hasn’t quite turned into the quarterback the 49ers envisioned when they selected him that high.

But there’s hope in Dallas he can be a positive addition and a capable backup for Dak Prescott. McCarthy was high on Trey Lance this spring, particularly because of how quickly he seemed to be learning things.

“You’ve got the learning curve but now he’s starting to get the timing,” McCarthy said back in May. “He’s close to being a master of the system. He’s got high understanding, he just needs as many reps as he can get.

“He’s crossing the thresholds in training, and I’ve been very, very pleased. His athletic ability is top-notch. We’ve adjusted some things in his motion — I don’t want to get into specifics — but you can see the improvement in timing.”

In Dallas’ most recent preseason game against Las Vegas, Trey Lance went 15-of-23 passing for 151 yards and a score. He also ran seven times for 34 yards and another score.
