The Dallas Cowboys got a harsh reality check on Sunday getting bashed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 19-3, in the season opener. There’s plenty of criticism to be passed around for the Cowboys’ shortcomings, and team owner Jerry Jones put some on No. 1 receiver CeeDee Lamb this week.

Lamb struggled in his first game as the top target for the Cowboys, dropping several passes and failing to make some contested catches. Speak on 105.3 The FAN in Dallas, Jones had piercing criticism of the wideout.

“You got to play through being covered. You got to catch balls covered. You say, ‘Well, that’s a trite things to say,’ but you can’t just because they doubled you up, not make some plays,” Jones said.

Lamb finished Sunday’s season opener with just two catches for 29 yards as Tampa Bay’s defense smothered the Cowboys. Dak Prescott struggled heavily before hurting his thumb, going 14-for-29 for 134 yards and an interception. Backup Cooper Rush was just as middling, going 7-for-13 for 64 yards.

With Prescott sidelined for potentially weeks, it’ll be on Rush and Lamb to get things sorted out in the passing game in the short term.

Lamb will need to step up with Gallup out for Sunday

The injury bug has hit the Cowboys hard and early in 2022. If anything, they could use some positive injury news heading into Week 2 against the reigning AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals. That just won’t be the case when it comes to wide receiver Michael Gallup.

After tearing his ACL last season, Gallup is nearing a return to the field. With Thursday being his first day back in pads, though, McCarthy made it official that he will also be amongst the Cowboys who are out this Sunday.

Gallup has been a reliable option at wideout for Dallas over his four seasons. He has caught 193 passes for nearly 3,000 yards and 15 touchdowns since 2018. His torn ACL was a setback but, with no Amari Cooper, he will have an even bigger role in the Cowboy’s offense this season.
