Joe Milton injury update: Brian Schottenheimer gives positive update on Cowboys QB

The Dallas Cowboys are working on figuring out their quarterback depth chart, and Joe Milton is a definite part of those calculations. But me might be unavailable for a short period of time.
Milton appeared to suffer a thumb injury while making a throw in Tuesday’s practice. He left early and did not return.
Following the afternoon’s session, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer weighed in on the injury. He noted that Joe Milton was only held out for precautionary reasons after hitting his hand on a helmet.
According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Schottenheimer said the staff “feels really good about it. It was precautionary. He felt like he could go back in.”
Milton has been battling for the second-string job with fellow quarterback Will Grier through much of the early portion of training camp. A second-year player, Milton has some physical tools that have to intrigue the Cowboys.

He’s got a rocket arm, though his accuracy has sometimes left a little to be desired. As a rookie in 2024, Joe Milton saw action in only one game. But he played relatively well, going 22-of-29 passing for 241 yards and a touchdown. He did not throw an interception, though he did lose a fumble. He also had 10 carries for 16 yards and a score.
Jerry Jones provides latest on Micah Parsons
While the Joe Milton news took some attention away from the main storyline of training camp, the Micah Parsons saga continued to dominate headlines. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has not spoken with Parsons since the star linebacker issued his trade request, Jones told reporters Tuesday. When asked when the situation becomes urgent, he said, “I stay urgent.”
Parsons has been with the Cowboys since going public with his trade request Friday, but still is not practicing. He is seeking a long-term deal that would likely make him the highest-paid non-quarterback, though no deal has come together. Meanwhile, the pass-rush market has shifted multiple times.
Jones said he has talked with Parsons’ representatives, but not the Pro Bowl linebacker himself since the request. In the meantime, the former Penn State star is still searching for a fresh contract.
“We will work through it or we won’t work through it,” Jones said Tuesday, via The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
