Jonathan Isaac undergoes season-ending surgery to repair torn left adductor muscle

Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac underwent season-ending surgery on Friday to repair his torn left adductor muscle, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Friday afternoon. It’s a major setback for the 25-year old, who played in only 11 games this year after missing two years with a torn ACL. MRI results revealed the adductor injury on Wednesday. He got the MRI after he had discomfort following Tuesday’s practice.

In his 11 games this year for Orlando, the former Florida State standout averaged 5.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game.

“Our thoughts are with Jonathan, whose fortitude in dealing with adversity is unique,” said Orlando Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman in a press release issued on Thursday. “Jonathan has worked extremely hard to return to the court this season and has demonstrated his impact on our team. We will be by his side as he focuses on the work ahead.”

His best season with the Magic thus far came in 2019-2020, when Isaac averaged 11.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. He got to play 75 games in 2018-2019, when he averaged 9.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game.

When he was selected as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, he became the second highest pick in Florida State basketball history, behind only Dave Cowens, who was the No. 4 overall selection of the Boston Celtics in 1970.

During his only season with the Seminoles, Isaac poured in 12.0 points per game, grabbed 7.8 rebounds per game, and blocked 1.5 shots per game. He also drilled 78% of his free throw attempts. The 6-foot-10, 230-pounder earned honorable mention All-ACC honors and All-ACC freshman team honors.

When he signed with Florida State coming out of high school, Isaac was one of the most highly regarded commitments in Seminole basketball history. According to the On3 Industry Rankings for the 2016 cycle, he was rated as the No. 4 small forward in America, and the No. 11 overall prospect in the nation.
