Jordan Love injury update: Adam Schefter reveals timeline for Packers QB after surgery

Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst revealed on Tuesday morning that franchise quarterback Jordan Love will undergo a procedure due to a lingering ligament issue. The injury was suffered in the Packers’ 30-10 preseason loss to the New York Jets on Saturday, where he took a sack and was just 1/5 passing for seven yards.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter however delivered some good news to Packers fans following the announcement, as he revealed that Love should be ready to go for Green Bay’s season opener against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7.
Love is no stranger to dealing with injury issues, as he suffered an MCL sprain near the end of Green Bay’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles last season. He would go onto miss the next two games, but returned for Green Bay’s week four matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
He was injured once again in the Packers’ regular-season ending loss to the Chicago Bears, leading to a miserable performance against the Eagles in the team’s Wild Card Round clash. Love passed for just 212 and no touchdowns while tossing three interceptions, leading to a 22-10 to the eventual Super Bowl Champions.
The former Utah State Aggie was selected with the No. 26 pick in the First Round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Packers, labeled as Aaron Rodgers‘ eventual successor. This would in fact be the case, as Love has been Green Bay’s starting quarterback for the past two seasons. He’s led the franchise to an 18-14 record with Playoff appearances in both seasons.

Green Bay holds three backup quarterbacks on roster
With Love likely out for the remainder of the preseason, backup quarterbacks Malik Willis, Sean Clifford and Taylor Elgersma will likely see the remainder of the snaps at the position. The trio combined for just 77 yards on 9/17 passing with no touchdowns or interceptions in the preseason opener against the New York Jets.
Willis started two regular season games for the Packers last season due to Love’s MCL sprain. He led the team to wins in both games after passing for a combined 324 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 114 yards and another score. If Love were to suffer a setback prior to the season opener, Willis is more than capable of stepping in.
Love now has just over three-and-a-half weeks to recover before the Packers open the 2025 NFL season at home against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:25 PM on CBS.
