Josef Newgarden gives update after terrifying flip during Gateway IndyCar race

Last night in the IndyCar race at Gateway, Josef Newgarden and Louis Foster got into each other for one of the nastiest hits you will see. Newgarden ended up flipping and riding the outside pit wall down the frontstretch before coming to a stop.
Thankfully, Josef Newgarden and Louis Foster were both okay after the incident. Foster was just involved in a big wreck on the streets of Detroit. For Newgarden, the struggles continue this season on the track. He was leading the race at the time of the wreck.
Late this morning, Newgarden updated race fans. He shared a few thoughts on the incident and his season.
“Not sure what to say, other than thank you to the AMR safety team and the safety of the car,” Josef Newgarden wrote on social media. “Seemed like everything was going our way last night, until it wasn’t. Not much you can do in a situation like that. This season has been pretty trying for everyone on the 2 crew. Only thing to do is look forward. It will only make the successes even sweeter. See you in Road America!”
Louis Foster got into the wall. Before IndyCar could throw the caution flag, Josef Newgarden came out of Turn 4 and down the frontstretch. The two collided at the inside wall, and Newgarden went up and flipped over. Thankfully, the No. 2 Team Penske car didn’t jump the wall onto pit road.
Right now, Josef Newgarden isn’t even in the top-10 in points for the IndyCar season. A driver who expects to compete for championships has had a nightmare season in 2025.

Josef Newgarden struggling in 2025
For Josef Newgarden, what is happening right now just can’t keep happening. A two-time champion of the sport, two-time Indy 500 winner, and he is only 34 years old. He expects to contend for wins and championship, that’s the beginning and end of it.
The best finish for Newgarden this season is P3 from St. Petersburg in the first race of the season. He has only two other top-10 finishes outside of that podium finish. 16th in points, if that holds on to the end of the season, it would be his worst finish in the standings since his rookie season in 2012 when he finished 23rd overall.
You have to think that eventually, luck will turn around for Newgarden. He is a driver who has exceptional skills and talent. There has been something missing this season for the No. 2 team, and it has been painfully obvious.
Can Josef Newgarden turn things around? Can he, or anyone for that matter, break up the duopoly that Alex Palou and Kyle Kirkwood have had on the 2025 season? Right now, it doesn’t appear that is possible. But there is a lot more racing left on the schedule.
