Justin Fields injury update: Fight breaks out between Jets, Panthers after late hit sends QB to tent

Justin Fields took a massive hit early in the second quarter against the Panthers on Sunday. Tyrod Taylor entered the game as the Jets QB1 was taken to the medical tent for further evaluation.
A fight broke out in the wake of the hit. Carolina safety Nick Scott was responsible for the hit, which Fields’ teammate, offensive lineman Armand Membou took exception to. Membou appeared to hit Scott in the back and a brawl ensued. This led to multiple flags being thrown on the play.
Fields would return to the game shortly after being evaluated. He emerged from the tent shortly after entering it.
Despite returning to the game shortly after, Fields finished the first half completing six of his 12 passing attempts for 46 yards. He added four rushes for 22 yards, but took three sacks during the first two quarters.
The only touchdown of the first half from either side came during the final minutes of the first half. The Panthers marched down the field, covering 52 yards in seven plays capped by a Bryce Young pass to Xavier Legette from three yards out.
It left New York with just over one minute left to try and tie the game, or at least kick a field goal before halftime. Instead, the Jets went 13 yards over seven plays to end the first half with no score. The Jets trailed 10-3 at the break.

Carolina received the opening kickoff of the second half and scored a field goal with that possession. Trailing 13-3, the Jets made the decision to bench Fields in favor of Taylor to begin the third quarter.
Fields is in his first season with the Jets after signing with the franchise back in March. That’s after one year spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers, after three with the Chicago Bears as a former first-round pick by them back in 2021. He was selected No. 11 overall in that cycle out of Ohio State as the Bears traded up with the New York Giants to select him.
Fans can tune into the Jets’ Week 7 matchup against the Panthers live on FOX. It remains to be seen whether Fields will re-enter the game. For now, it’s Tyrod Taylor’s show in MetLife Stadium.
Taylor has been a journeyman in the NFL since joining the league in 2011. He’s on his seventh team, but has been a steady hand for any team he’s played for.
