New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn announced Wednesday that quarterback Justin Fields (concussion) will not play in Sunday’s Week 3 road contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Veteran backup Tyrod Taylor will start in his place.

“He’s still going through his [concussion] protocol. So, he’ll be out,” Glenn said.

Fields suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of New York’s 30-10 Week 2 defeat to the Buffalo Bills this past Sunday. The back of his head slammed the turf at MetLife Stadium after getting taken down by Bills defensive end Joey Bosa. Glenn said Monday it would be hard for Fields to play if he didn’t practice before Friday.

“That’s just something I believe in, so, again, I don’t want to put anything on that as far as where we’re at with him until we get to that point.” Glenn said.

Justin Fields unable to play in Week 3

Fields had one of the best games of his career in the 34-32 Week 1 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had one of his worst against Buffalo. Fields completed just 3-of-11 passes for 27 yards, and his 1.1 QBR was the worst in any game of his career.

Taylor went 7-of-11 for 56 yards in garbage time against the Bills. The 36-year-old last started five games for the New York Giants in 2023. He’ll make his 59th NFL start on Sunday against the Buccaneers as the Jets look to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2021.

“Here’s what I do know — I know this is an instant coffee league,” Glenn said. “From the media, to the fans — everyone expects this — when you just start, OK, we’re going to the Super Bowl. But, we’ve all played Legos before. And you have to make sure everything is aligned, and you keep stacking it day by day. And to me, that’s how I look at it. I understand the outside noise, and I’m not affected by the outside noise.

“Because I know exactly what we’re trying to build here. And I wish it was instant coffee, but it’s not. These things take time. My confidence or the coaches’ confidence or the players’ confidence is not going to be shaken. We’re going to continue to do the things we’ve got to do to build this.”
