Justin Fields opens up on Steelers QB controversy, rumblings that Russell Wilson will start

The Steelers could be making a change at quarterback this week, despite Justin Fields helping Pittsburgh to a 4-2 start. Mike Tomlin is considering going with Russell Wilson as the starter for Sunday’s game against the Jets and there are rumblings that Wilson will indeed start.
Justin Fields opened up about the potential quarterback change during a media availability on Thursday.
“I mean, I don’t think I played good enough, if I’m being real with you, if I’m being real with myself,” Justin Fields said. “We got a few wins, of course I’m glad about that. But there’s areas that I could be better at and I’m just going to continue to work on those and continue to get better.”
Fields and Russell Wilson were locked in a quarterback battle this offseason that was ultimately won by Wilson. However, he was banged up to start the year, leading to Fields starting the first six games of the year.
With Wilson now healthy, it appears as though he will get the start for the Steelers on Sunday against the Jets. It would be understandable if Fields was frustrated with Tomlin or the organization, but it appears as though he is just frustrated with himself for not playing better when given his opportunities.

Adam Schefter delves into Steelers starting QB dilemma with Justin Fields, Russell Wilson
ESPN insider Adam Schefter provided an update on where things stand with the Steelers starting quarterback situation Thursday morning on First Take.
“Just follow the breadcrumbs, right,” Adam Schefter said. “Mike Tomlin has declined at any point to give the full-time starting quarterback job to Justin Fields. He has not named him at any point the full-time regular starter. He, initially, had named Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback. This past week, he says that Russell Wilson is in consideration to start Sunday night’s game against the Jets. When do you hear a coach say a player is in consideration to start a game and then not start it?”
The Pittsburgh Steelers made the decision over the offseason to revamp their quarterback room. That meant moving on from former first round pick Kenny Pickett and bringing in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Both have starting experience with Wilson seemingly on the back end of his career and Fields needing to reset after an inconsistent tenure with the Chicago Bears.
