On Thursday, New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields left practice after suffering a toe injury. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided further details on Fields’ injury.

“Justin Fields, carted off with a toe injury from getting stepped on from practice, suffered a dislocated toe. No fracture and not the big toe,” Rapoport wrote. “He’s still undergoing tests, but that’s the initial diagnosis. Severity is unclear.”

Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets this offseason after the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t re-sign him. Fields only spent one season in Pittsburgh, amassing 10 appearances and six starts.

Fields finished the year with 1,106 passing yards and five touchdowns compared to one interception. He also recorded 289 yards and five scores in the ground game. The Steelers posted a 4-2 record in his six starts.

Alas, Fields ultimately was benched when QB Russell Wilson returned from a preseason injury. While many fans called for the Steelers to reinstate Fields as the team’s QB1, Pittsburgh ultimately stuck with Wilson and was eliminated by the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wildcard round of the NFL Playoffs.

If healthy, Fields is expected to start behind center for the Jets this fall. His competition in the quarterback room is Tyrod Taylor, Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook. Earlier this week, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn raved about Fields’ success in offseason workouts.

“Listen, he’s as consistent as it is,” Glenn said. “The way that he operates in OTAs is the same way he’s going to operate in training camp. The thing is, you can see that he is improving; he understands he’s our guy, but he also understands that he has to work for it, too. Just because you’re our guy doesn’t mean that you [don’t] have a job to do and the guy behind you isn’t going to compete for the job either.”

Justin Fields isn’t taking the opportunity for granted. After the team’s first summer camp practice on Wednesday, Fields discussed his gratitude for not having to deal with some of the issues he faced last season on the Steelers.

“I think you don’t have to worry about as much,” Fields said. “Last year, like I said, it was kind of in a weird position, but I think, you don’t have to do as much thinking and you kind of just know where you are and focus on getting better, focus on leading the team each and every day, so it’s just not as much other stuff going around, so it’s good.”
