Kevin Harvick went after a Chicago Sun-Times columnist for blasting NASCAR’s Street Race. On Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour, Harvick called out Steve Greenberg for a story he wrote about the NASCAR event in Chicago.

“You’ve got some of these slapsticks like this guy from the (Chicago) Sun-Times, this Steve Greenberg guy that wrote the crappy story this morning,” Kevin Harvick said. “For the most part, people who actually want to pay attention and be part of the event do the things that aren’t just looking for a headline because they write bad stories.

“That’s the truth, though. A guy like this that doesn’t know anything about NASCAR, doesn’t want to come out and find out about the sport. He wants to just show up and talk bad. One of the best events that NASCAR has ever decided to do because of the fact they stepped out on a limb. We went street racing, and it’s entertaining to watch.”

Harvick continued: “Everybody that was at my house yesterday wanted to watch the race because of what it was. It’s exciting, the cars are in close quarters, you make a mistake, as we saw during this race, pay for it. It creates different things that you can’t see on a naturally built road course or a race course. It’s one of the greatest events that they’ve created lately, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.”

After the race, Greenberg penned an article that was titled “Dear NASCAR: End of the road in Chicago can’t come fast enough.” He then explained why NASCAR should no longer host the Chicago Street Race.

“Before you motored into our lives, we never knew we needed auto racing on our beloved lakefront. That’s because we didn’t need it,” Greenberg wrote. “We speak baseball here. Football. Basketball. Hockey. Our teams might not be fluent in those languages, but we are. You say ‘drafting,’ we think Colston Loveland. You say ‘banking,’ we think Ricketts. You say ‘ovals,’ we think White Sox box score. You say ‘restrictor plate,’ we blink like idiots.”

Sunday’s Chicago Street Race was the final one since it was a three-year contract. It’s not clear if NASCAR will renew its deal with the city to have more races at Grant Park.
