Disaster on Lap 7 under rainy conditions at Mexico City. Kyle Busch spun out going into Turn 1 and collected multiple cars. Kyle Larson, AJ Allmendinger, Zane Smith, and Chase Briscoe were all involved in this early NASCAR Cup Series wreck.

NASCAR was quick to throw the caution flag on Lap 1 as rain came down. Even with drivers on wet-weather tires, Kyle Busch found himself spinning out in the braking zone and knocking into other drivers like a bowling ball into the pins.

Both Busch and Larson are under the DVP in the garage area. The teams are trying to repair the cars and get their drivers back onto the track to salvage any kind of finish.

Starting this race on slicks was probably not a great idea. However, NASCAR acted quickly when the rain showed up and got the caution thrown. That allowed drivers to come down and put on wet-weather tires.

For those who wonder, why not just let teams make that decision under green? Well, that’s not what you want. There is a 4000-foot straight that goes into Turn 1. About the same length as the Talladega Superstretch on the backstretch of NASCAR’s largest oval track.

These cars would have been pushing 180 MPH or more before the braking zone for that first turn. If the caution hadn’t been thrown, drivers would have sped over to that turn on Lap 2 and we would have seen a junk yard form on the Mexico City track.

Even with the caution, teams didn’t have to put wet tires on. Austin Cindric and Chris Buescher both stayed out on slicks. That didn’t work out too well for them.

Kyle Busch with another setback in NASCAR season

Today was a day that I thought Kyle Busch needed to take advantage of. His day is more or less over before it ever really began. That is a shame for that No. 8 team because they really needed a good run today for points and for the chance at a win.

Slick tires are being put back on after the first stage. Drivers went long, and others cut the stage short to pit and then, come out during Stage 2 on those slick tires. They are hoping that the racing lines have dried out enough to give the slicks enough grip to hold on.

Shane van Gisbergen looks great today. He had a big lead on Ty Gibbs for most of Stage 1. However, he has to fight his way back through the field to get the lead after many drivers stayed out.

Kyle Busch is not having a fiesta tonight in Mexico City. That much is for sure.
