Everyone was worried that Kyle Larson had run out of time to make the Coca-Cola 600. His day is now done after wrecking on Lap 93. Larson was caught up in a wreck on a restart that included String Ray Robb and Kyffin Simpson. The NASCAR driver’s Double attempt is done.

Tony Stewart remains the only driver to complete all 1100 miles of the Double. Kyle Larson downshifted into the turn and spun out. The Cup Series champion made a couple of mistakes today that ultimately cost him a chance at completing the Double.

Despite the delays today at Indianapolis, Larson will make it to Charlotte on time. He starts the Coca-Cola 600 P2 later tonight.

Today has been a truly strange Indianapolis 500. The track is much cooler than usual. That leads to different grip levels on the track and on pit road. A rain delay to start the day put Kyle Larson behind schedule, and then another caution for rain pushed it even further back.

When Scott McLaughlin wrecked on the pace laps, we should have known today was going to be a wild one. There have been fires, wrecks on pit road, and pole-sitter Robert Shwartzman even collided with his pit crew in a terrifying moment on pit road.

Many teams and drivers are just hoping that they aren’t the next to be bitten by Indy today. A whirlwind of a race so far, whoever wins this race is going to have to earn it the hard way. It is becoming a race of attrition with every lap and pit stop.

Kyle Larson explains what happened leading to wreck

All of those worries about making it to Charlotte on time, out the window. Though I’m sure Kyle Larson isn’t happy about how it ended. Is it better that he wrecked out early rather than being forced to pit and leave the car later in the race when his time ran out? Who is to say?

Today was definitely not what Hendrick, Arrow McLaren, and Larson imagined. A rough way to end the day. He explained what happened after leaving the infield care center.

“It was a bit crazy there on the start, and yeah, I got like tight behind Takuma. I was really close to him, and I think as I finally got maybe shaded left, and I haven’t seen a replay. I got loose and just kind of got all over the place. Yeah, drove me, yeah, so I spun. Just hate that I gotta little too eager there on the restart and caused that crash.

“So, hate it for everybody that also got caught up in it. Yeah, just bummed out. So, try to get over this quickly, and you know, get on to Charlotte. Just forget about it and try to win the next one.”
