One NASCAR lawsuit is now off the board. Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing have settled their differences out of court. Legacy had taken RWR to court over the sale/transfer of a Cup Series charter. The two have come to an agreement that at this time remains confidential.

Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing have done what 23XI Racing, Front Row Motorsports, and NASCAR haven’t been able to yet. This is one legal saga that has been decided. Can’t say the same for the antitrust lawsuit.

The two Cup Series organizations released a joint statement on the matter. We will see if Legacy now expands to a three-charter organization in 2026.

“Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing jointly announced today the teams have reached a resolution regarding the sale and transaction of a team charter,” a statement to the media reads. There are quotes from both team owners as well.

“Reaching a positive outcome was important for everyone involved,” Jimmie Johnson, owner of Legacy Motor Club, said in the press release. “I truly respect the effort put forth by Robby Benton and Rick Ware to reach a settlement so we may all focus on our business operations and future goals. I’m glad this is behind us and we can all move forward in unison.”

Rick Ware confirms sale of charter to Legacy Motor Club

In the press release, Rick Ware gave a statement as well. The Cup Series team owner has a lot of investments in and out of NASCAR. He is apparently looking to sell off his team to TJ Puchyr, but this lawsuit was getting in the way of that.

So, now, things have settled. Here is what Ware had to say.

“I met with Jimmie [Johnson] and Cal Wells recently and we came to an agreement to sell and transfer a charter from RWR to Legacy Motor Club,” Rick Ware said. So, the charter is being sold. “I believe we landed in a mutually beneficial place for both teams and the result will be a clear path forward for us all. I look forward to putting all of our focus on finishing the 2025 season strong.”

A charter will move to Legacy from Rick Ware. However, it remains to be seen how that charter is used. Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports notes that Legacy likely doesn’t have the time to expand to a three-car operation. Not before the 2026 season. Pockrass also noted that RFK Racing is set to lease a charter from Rick Ware next year. That is exactly what they did this season.
