On Monday, 53-year-old Paul Doyle was arrested after allegedly driving his car through the Liverpool city center during Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League victory parade. According to ESPN, 27 people were taken to hospital. Moreover, 79 total people were reportedly injured.

On Thursday, TMZ reported that Doyle is being charged with with two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, two counts of causing unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, two counts of attempted unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and one count of dangerous driving. TMZ also reported that Doyle is facing a maximum sentence of life behind bars if convicted.

In the wake of the horrific scene, Merseyside Police said that the attack isn’t being treated as an act of terrorism. The police reported that Doyle was “unfit through drugs,” per The New York Times.

The United Kingdom has been in mourning following the terrifying incident. Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly addressed the attack, calling for his fellow countrymen to stand strong during the troubling times.

“Tonight, I have spoken to [Liverpool mayor] Steve Rotheram about the terrible events in Liverpool and the remarkable bravery shown by the police and other emergency services,” Starmer said on Monday. “They are supporting and caring for those injured in these terrible events.

“Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror. The city has a long and proud history of coming together through difficult times. Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool.”

Hundreds of thousands of supporters lined the streets to celebrate Liverpool FC’s title. It was the team’s 20th league title, tying Manchester United’s record for most titles in the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah scored the tying goal against Crystal Palace in the 84th minute. The clutch moment came Ryan Gravenberch received a red card in the 68th minute.

“Last time it was in the pandemic, which wasn’t a great feeling but still a Premier League,” Salah told Sky Sports. “To win the second one with the fans at Anfield, first the Spurs game and now today, you can see how much it means.”

The streets that the celebration took place on were reportedly closed off to public vehicles. However, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims believes that the perpetrator followed an ambulance that was allowed into the area to help someone with a possible heart attack, and subsequently drove through the massive crowd.
