Matthew Stafford injury update: Sean McVay updates status of Rams QB

Dealing with some back soreness coming into training camp, QB Matthew Stafford has been resting over the past week to be at his best going into the upcoming season. Now, the Rams are expecting him back, at least in a limited, separate capacity, for this week.
According to Sean McVay per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Stafford won’t be a full-go tomorrow for Los Angeles. He’ll instead be doing a solo workout on some of the basics as he takes care of himself in a rehab.
“#Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters that QB Matthew Stafford won’t participate in the jog-through tomorrow, but will do a workout on his own, instead,” Rapoport tweeted.
“It’s static throwing. It’s some of the unloaded running on the treadmill. Sometimes it might even be walking. Cardio and core,” said McVay.
Stafford, at the age of 37 entering the 17th season of his career in the NFL and fifth with the Los Angeles Rams, started to feel this back tightness last weekend coming into the team’s training camp at Loyola Marymount University. That caused the franchise to take a precautious approach with their starting quarterback with the focus less on this period, especially as he was unlikely to play in the preseason anyways, and more so on their opener on September 7th. He has since seen a back specialist with him designated as week-to-week with no official timeline on a complete return.

With that, Jimmy Garroppolo, Stetson Bennett, and Dresser Winn are the other quarterbacks on the depth chart for LA. They’ll continue to see the snaps at camp in Stafford’s absence, including a pair of joint periods the next two weeks, ahead of their first two preseason games at home respectively, starting this week with the Dallas Cowboys in Oxnard, California before one the following week with the LA Chargers in El Segundo, California.
Stafford is coming off another decent season with the Rams, who went 10-7 and reached the Divisional Round before losing to the Philadelphia Eagles. He posted 65.8% completion but did see his other passing production go down just a bit to 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
Stafford’s status over the course of the next few weeks looks to be determined as he continues to ensure he’s healthy for the start of this season. That leaves just over a month, or five weeks from today, for Los Angeles to have him ready to go for kickoff on that opening Sunday against the Houston Texans.
