It didn’t take long for two-time Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon to find a new home after being released by the Denver Broncos. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Gordon is expected to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad.

Joining the Kansas City running back room means that the former Wisconsin Badgers star will remain in the AFC West, where he has spent the entirety of his NFL career. Gordon spent the first five years of his NFL career with the now-Los Angeles Chargers after being selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft as the number 15 overall pick. After failing to agree to a contract extension, the former Badger left and headed to Denver in 2020, where he was until being released by the team.

In recent weeks, before being released by the Broncos, Gordon had lost carries to veteran running back Latavius Murray, who the Broncos claimed off waivers earlier this season. This followed Denver losing his backfield mate Javonte Williams after he went down earlier in the year with a season-ending ACL injury. Reports prior to his exit from Denver suggested that Gordon’s standing with the franchise was not what it used to be, especially after putting the ball on the ground five times in ten games.

On the season, the former Wisconsin star has amassed only 318 rushing yards on 90 attempts, finding the end zone twice in 2022. While he came close to 1,000 rushing yards during his previous two seasons with the franchise, it was evident from the beginning he didn’t vibe with the team’s new coaching staff.

The Chiefs are hoping to gain some more stability at running back. With starting running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on IR, Gordon, we’ll compete with Isaiah Pacheco, Jerick McKinnon, and Ronald Jones for touches out of the backfield.
