Tensions are high in Dallas between Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and star linebacker Micah Parsons, to say the least. Parsons recently requested a trade with contract negotiations stalling out, and Jones has not been shy about taking shots at him.

The owner said that he has no intentions of trading Parsons and did not consider the trade request to be serious. That begs the question of whether, after all this, it is possible for them to work out a deal and repair their relationship before the season begins. But Jones apparently isn’t too worried.

“I think the relationship is what it is,” he said Saturday. “… I like Micah.”

Parsons, 26, is entering the final year of his rookie deal. The two-time All-Pro pass rusher revealed that he initially approached the Cowboys about a contract extension after the 2023 season but the team “did not want to start any negotiations at that point.”

The linebacker has been a key part of the Cowboys defense over the past four seasons after winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021. This past season he recorded 43 total tackles, 12 sacks, two forced fumbles and one pass defended across 13 games.

Parsons has recorded double digit sacks every season he has been in the league, with his career total amounting to 52.5. That’s the type of production that would put him in line for a big pay day. But while some of the NFL’s other elite pass rushers like TJ Watt, Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett all received new contracts, Parsons is still left fighting for his.

It’s certainly not a good look with the season set to kick off in a little more than a month on Sept. 4. We’ll see whether an agreement is reached before then, or perhaps this relationship has soured too much to salvage.

Micah Parsons formally requests trade from Dallas Cowboys

Parsons released a lengthy message Friday via X, making his trade request public. He indicated that he was tired of the way Jones was treating him, both in contract negotiations and in comments made to the media.

“Unfortunately, I no longer want to be here,” Parsons wrote. “I no longer want to be held to closed-door negotiations without my agent present. No longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me.

“… I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to [Cowboys CEO] Stephen Jones personally.”
