Mike McCarthy hot seat: Jerry Jones responds to calls for in-season coaching change

Even after another loss for the Cowboys, Jerry Jones still isn’t yet considering a coaching change for the franchise.
Following a 34-6 outcome against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Jones spoke with the media and expressed no need to make a decision now on Mike McCarthy. He cited previous in-season decisions that didn’t work out previously as a reasoning for it.
“Jerry Jones said he has no interest in making a coaching change,” tweeted Jon Machota of The Athletic. “He has fired coaches in-season before and he has regretted it every time.”
The divisional matchup between the Eagles and Cowboys was actually competitive through the first half. However, a late touchdown turned a one-point game into an eight-point deficit for them at halftime before 20-0 shutout in the second half. By the end, Philly had doubled Dallas up in yardage and in turnovers with them totaling up five.
The 28-point loss to the Eagles dropped Dallas’ overall record to 3-6. That includes being 1-1 in the division against the NFC East but also being 0-4 this season in AT&T Stadium with the average margin of those losses being by 23.5 points – which would be even more if not for a 19-0 fourth quarter to turn a 22-point deficit to a three-point loss to the Baltimore Ravens back in September.

With that, Mike McCarthy also now has a record of 45-31 through five years as head coach of the Cowboys. This is certain to now be either the team’s worst or second-worst finish of his tenure after being at 6-10 in 2020 before being 12-5 in each of the last three seasons in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
Most of the concerns around McCarthy, though, had been their playoff shortcomings. As of now, that is something that they won’t have to concern themselves with anyway.
For context, this season has also been one with several key injuries for the Cowboys. They had been missing defenders like Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence for the past few weeks before today was their first game without Dak Prescott, whose status for the remainder of the season is still to be determined with an injury to his hamstring.
Dallas has eight games left to determine how this year finishes for them. It sounds like only then will there be a decision on the staff for the Cowboys according to their owner himself today.
