Mike McCarthy reacts to Cowboys' blowout loss to Saints
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy revealed why his team struggled against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. While speaking to reporters on Monday, McCarthy said the Saints finished better than Dallas.
“I wouldn’t say it’s an effort issue. I think it really was they were quicker to the first punch than we were,” McCarthy said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “They finished better than we did.”
The Cowboys lost to the Saints 44-19 and struggled on both sides of the ball. On offense, Dallas turned the ball over twice and had just 68 rushing yards. On defense, Dallas allowed 432 yards of total offense, including 190 on the ground.
“They had a perfect game plan from the start,” McCarthy admitted, per Sports Illustrated. “They used a combination of big plays in both the passing and running attacks in dominant fashion.”

This is the second consecutive home loss for the Cowboys dating back to last season when they fell to the Green Bay Packers 48-32 in a playoff game. The good thing for the Cowboys is there’s a lot of football left to be played this season and have plenty of time to correct the mistakes they made on Sunday.

“This is early,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, per the team’s official website. “It’s very, very early, and we certainly didn’t see this coming, but obviously we’ve got a lot of room for improvement here. … We were able to keep our drives, had some pretty good possessions, kick some field goals, but you can’t be an effective opponent in a game if you can’t stop them from scoring touchdowns with every possession and not only use the clock.
“… So we all know that that’s not representative of the kind of team that you’ll see out here for the Dallas Cowboys this year.”
The Cowboys have another tough matchup on Sunday as they face the Baltimore Ravens. And like Dallas, the Ravens are coming off a loss, so both teams are in an early must-win matchup so they won’t be in a big hole by the end of the month.
