MLB insider names the top potential free agent destinations for Pete Alonso

Pete Alonso has been one of the best first basemen in baseball and is set to hit the open market this winter. MLB’s hot stove will certainly heat up for a player his caliber with plenty of teams looking to give Alonso a nice contract. Sure, the New York Mets might be one of them but there has been no commitment to staying in Queens.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post put together a list of potential landing spots for Alonso if he were to leave the Mets. Four teams were mentioned, with two coming from the American League and two others to remain in the National League.
“I might not bet against the Cubs, who need a bopper,” Heyman said. “The Astros, who have Alonso’s Tampa Plant High teammate Kyle Tucker, would fit, too. The Mariners, as well. He also looks pretty good in Denver.”
Denver would be home to the Colorado Rockies, a place Alonso performed quite well on Thursday. Five at-bats resulted in three hits, two of which were home runs, and three RBIs. Power hitters always have success when playing in the Mile High City but rarely do they agree to make it home during free agency.
Joining Houston would put Alonso on the most consistent team in MLB over the past few seasons. All the Astros do is make the ALCS, even without a true power bat at first. Jose Abreu was supposed to be that guy but Houston decided to move on from him.

And there are Chicago and Seattle, two clubs in need of some power. The Mariners have one of the worst offenses in baseball despite currently sitting atop the AL West, not currently having too many long-term solutions. A few stars currently call the North Side home but their team OPS is well below league average.
Either of them would get an instant jolt of power by adding Alonso to the everyday lineup.
Now, Alonso has not had the best season by his own standards. The OPS is currently under .800 and would be a career first for him. Alonso is now up to 25 home runs and 63 RBIs, well below totals from previous years — although, nearly 40 games are remaining to make up numbers.
But as Heyman points out, there should still be plenty of teams lining up to sign the former Florida Gators product — his power is too much to deny.
