NASCAR insider reveals latest in Legacy Motor Club lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing

A NASCAR insider shared the latest in Legacy Motor Club’s lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing. On The Teardown podcast, Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic explained why the two NASCAR Cup Series teams are in a legal battle.
“Rick Ware Racing agreed to sell a charter to Legacy Motor Club. That is indisputable,” Bianchi said. “What Rick Ware Racing is contending is that we wanted to sell that charter effective with the 2027 season. Rick Ware Racing has two charters. One of those charters is leased to RFK Racing. That’s a multi-year agreement, from my understanding.
Legacy Motor Club is seeking the charter for the 2026 season. Rick Ware has two charters, and as Bianchi mentioned, one of the charters is being used by RFK (driven by Ryan Preece). But if Rick Ware has to give that charter to Legacy next year, the team won’t have a charter in 2026 since it has to give the other to RFK since it’s a multi-year agreement.

“They did not to run as an open team in 2026,” Bianchi added. “Their deal they believe was for 2027, give them another year for the charter and then they can figure it out in ’27. They did not want to do that.”

Bianchi also mentioned that the Rick Ware team reportedly believed the “terms were changed on us and weren’t aware of the terms.” When it comes to Legacy Motor Club, Bianchi said the team’s comeback is “You signed this contract, you knew it was for 2026. That’s all over the document. Whether you noticed it or not, we agreed to 2026. The contract is very clear.”
Legacy filed the lawsuit last Tuesday in Charlotte. “Despite having a binding deal in place, RWR (Rick Ware Racing) wants to back out,” said Legacy in the complaint. “It has told Legacy that it will not, under any circumstances, close the parties’ transaction. Legacy has tried to talk sense into RWR, to no avail. Legacy’s patience has run out. It now brings this suit to enforce its rights and hold RWR to its deal.”
