The USA TODAY 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway is currently under red flag with rain drops falling on the racetrack and more severe weather looming.

NASCAR prepared for the possibility of weather rolling in, bringing rain tires for use. Despite having them on standby, NASCAR has elected to keep the race under red rather than run on them until the nasty stuff arrives at the racetrack.

Fans, as well as some drivers, are perplexed by NASCAR’s call, confused about the protocol when it comes to the rain tires. Mike Forde, a spokesperson for the sanctioning body, offered some clarity as for why racing hasn’t continued on the wet weather tires.

“For clarity’s sake, when it comes to ovals, these cars do not have wipers or flaps,” Forde wrote on X. “NASCAR has been consistent on not racing on ovals if there’s rain and/or the track could have spray for safety purposes.”

Asked what’s the point in having the wet weather tires, Forde had the following response:

“Great question. Helps NASCAR get back to racing quicker,” Forde said. “No longer need a completely dry track to get em back on track … Nothing dries a track better than 30+ race cars. Wet weather tires helps make that happen.”

New Hampshire Motor Speedway shares new update on race status amid weather delay

NASCAR and New Hampshire Motor Speedway haven’t completely shut the door on getting back to racing.

“Speedway and NASCAR officials continue to monitor the situation with the intention of restarting the race if weather allows,” the racetrack said in a statement.

The one driver who absolutely does not want to see racing resume is Tyler Reddick. Reddick, the leader at the time of the red flag, would be awarded the win if the race is called.

“It’s interesting,” Reddick told Alan Cavanna. “We’re gonna bank of Mother Nature to keep coming down. We had some good restarts. Not our best day, we just have to take advantage of being off with a different strategy.”
