Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is one of less than 10 active head coaches with a Super Bowl to his name, however, his Hall-of-Fame status is still a question. Joining the Rich Eisen Show, NFL insider Tom Pelissero shared what he believes the former Green Bay Packers coach needs to do to lock in his NFL Hall of Fame bid.

“If he becomes the first coach to win a Super Bowl with two teams, I think he should be,” Pelissero said. “Right now, he already has a Hall of Fame case. I mean, would you consider Sean Payton a Hall of Famer? They have almost identical resumes. Their winning percentage is very similar. Mike made the playoffs, I believe, more times than Sean did. Obviously, there’s the entire Bountygate thing, where he missed a year, that disrupted some of it.”

“With Mike, it’s been more consistent,” Pelissero continued. “He’s building things up in Dallas just like he did in Green Bay. I fully anticipate that they’re going to be really good. If they can come out and go to another Super Bowl, win another Super Bowl, McCarthy is a lock in my mind as a Hall of Famer.”

Mike McCarthy won his first Super Bowl title with the Packers in his fifth season as their head coach. Since then, he coached the Packers then the Cowboys to eight winning seasons with three losing seasons. His overall win percentage is 61.4% and it’s 52.4% in the playoffs.

Although his record could put him on the Hall of Fame list as is, showing that he could build a second franchise and get them to a title for the first time in decades would definitely put him over the top.

“Right now, he’s in with a lot of coaches who’ve won one Super Bowl,” Pelissero said. “These are the moments that legacies are made of. Mike’s aware of where he is in his career, the fire is still there, I know that… he wants to win. He wants to go out and kick everyone’s ass. And he wants to build something sustainable here.”

The Cowboys have fallen short the last two seasons despite winning 12 regular season games. McCarthy is taking over play-calling this year after the departure of Kellen Moore. It’s seen as an all-in move by the head coach as pressure continues to mount in Dallas.
