NFL headquarters shooting: League releases statement amid outpouring of support

The NFL has released a statement expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support following this week’s shooting at the league headquarters. Four people died after a gunman opened fire in Midtown, New York.
New York City mayor Eric Adams confirmed the shooter was targeting NFL headquarters at 345 Park Ave. on Monday. The gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and a note was found on his body claiming he had CTE and asking for his brain to be studied.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell instructed league employees to take Tuesday off and later said they should continue working remotely through Aug. 8. The league also expressed its support for the family of victims – including Didarul Islam, an off-duty New York police officer killed that day – in the aftermath.
“The NFL is deeply grateful for the global outpouring of support following the tragic act of violence at the New York City building that houses our league office among other organizations,” the statement read. “We honor the four innocent lives lost, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, whose heroism will never be forgotten.
“Our thoughts are with the survivors as they begin the difficult journey of physical and emotional recovery. The NFL family is resilient and united, and together, we will find strength in one another as we heal.”

The shooter initially went up the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owned the building, Rudin Management. He shot and killed one person on that floor. In the end, four people died and several others were injured. An NFL employee – later identified as Craig Clementi – was among the injuries, Goodell later said.
“NFL employees: As has been widely reported, a gunman committed an unspeakable act of violence in our building at 345 Park Avenue,” Goodell said in a memo. “One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family.
“We believe that all of our employees are otherwise sage and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared. We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others. Please continue to pay close attention to GSOC notices for all available emergency information. These communications allow us to ensure that you are safe.”
