Nick Bosa injury update: 49ers DE suffers torn ACL, ruled out for season

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa reportedly suffered a torn ACL Sunday vs. the Arizona Cardinals and is out for the season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported it was a clear tear, but he will require season-ending surgery as the 49ers improved to 3-0.
The injury occurred with 51 seconds remaining in the first quarter. It was later announced that Bosa had a knee injury and was out for the remainder of the game.
A five-time Pro Bowler, Bosa is one of the key pieces for the 49ers defense. He has recorded 17 tackles, including 2.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery on the young season.
The San Francisco defense still managed to hold down the fort in his absence on Sunday, earning a 16-15 victory. That improved them to 3-0 this year and the concern now lies with Bosa, whose name is added to a growing number of injuries for the team.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters postgame that the team believed Bosa avoided an ACL tear. However, that proved to not be the case.

Bosa, 27, was in the middle of his seventh season with the 49ers. A former No. 2 overall pick, Bosa’s been one of the best pass rushers in the league when healthy.
Bosa’s played 14+ games every years aside from 2020 and now this year. Back in 2022, he set career a high in sacks with 18.5 and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
In total, Bosa has 64.5 sacks in his career to go along with 278 total tackles. Coming from an elite family of football players, including brother Joey Bosa, it’s a massive loss for the 49ers.
At Ohio State, Bosa was a First-Team All-American and also the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2017. He played in just three games in 2018 for the Buckeyes due to a core muscle injury and eventually withdrew from Ohio State for the rest of the year. While recovering, his draft stock didn’t drop and the 49ers took him with the second pick the following spring.
