This is a way early preview of the chatter to come in regards to Dak Prescott. A Fox Sports personality speculated that the Patriots may sign him.

Of course, FS1’s Nick Wright, was predicting what New England may do this time next year, when the Cowboys quarterback, presumably, would be an unrestricted free agent. Wright believes New England could use this year’s draft to build for Prescott and the team in 2025.

It seems like a stretch, but here’s his reasoning. It all starts with what the Patriots will do with pick No. 3 next month under the direction of new coach Jerod Mayo. Most mock drafts believe New England will select a quarterback at No. 3, either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye. The team traded away their starter, Mac Jones, earlier this month.

“What if the Patriots traded the pick at No. 3, particularly if (former North Carolina quarterback) Drake Maye is there,” Wright said, Thursday, on First Things First. “Because then people want it even more because people seem to love him. Say he’s traded to Minnesota for (picks) 11 and 23 and something. (The Patriots) draft a tackle there … draft one of the mini-stud wide receivers in this class at 23, and have the plan be: we’re gonna sign Dak Prescott.”

Conflicting reports emerged this week about Dak Prescott, contract with Cowboys

Wait, there’s more to this theory with the Patriots and Dak Prescott.

“He’s an unrestricted free agent and the whole idea … (the Patriots) could do the rare front-loaded deal,” Wright said. “You’re building the culture. The Cowboys couldn’t stop you. It seems he’s going to be available, teams with cap space aren’t going to be at the front of the line for him.

“Could that be the Patriots’ plan? Trade down (in next month’s draft), build the team, install a culture and then install an older known quantity at quarterback next season.”

Prescott is in the final season of his contract with the Cowboys. Sides recently agreed to convert the quarterback’s $5 million roster bonus into a signing bonus. This tweak would free up $4 million when it comes to cap space. The Cowboys need the extra space so that they can extend the contracts of receiver CeeDee Lamb and pass rusher Micah Parsons.

Earlier this month, the NFL Network reported that the Cowboys weren’t negotiating with Prescott to extend his contract past this season.

Then CBS Sports NFL Insider Josina Anderson countered that report with info suggesting the Cowboys do plan to renegotiate with Dak Prescott. She said the new deal could, in fact, be negotiated this year, as opposed to waiting until after the season is over.

Prescott will turn 31 as the Cowboys begin training camp in July. He finished as runner-up to Lamar Jackson for NFL MVP this past season. But although Prescott enjoyed a fantastic regular season, his postseason came to a quick end. The Cowboys earned the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs, yet lost badly at home to the Packers in the opening round.
