Oklahoma will be led into this matchup by quarterback John Mateer, who is a veteran transfer from Washington State. He made a strong first impressing during his first start for Oklahoma last week.
During the season opening 35-3 victory over Illinois State, Mateer completed 30 of his 37 passing attempts for 392 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He added another touchdown on the ground as well.
Tim Tebow is one analyst very high on Mateer’s play. He compared aspects of his game to former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel during a recent appearance on the Paul Finebaum Show.
“I think John Mateer is one of the twitchiest players in college football,” Tebow said. “He reminds me a little bit, just a little bit – this is early – a tiny bit of the way that Johnny Manziel was really twitchy in the pocket, could make people miss.”

Mateer already had a strong reputation coming in given the success he enjoyed at Washington State. He finished the 2024 season having thrown for 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
He also showcased his dual-threat abilities having scored an additional 15 touchdowns on the ground to go along with 826 rushing yards. He was Washington State’s leading rusher last season, and it looks like he’ll be able to provide a similar spark to the Sooners in 2025.
However, Mateer will have his hands full during his first season with the Sooners. OU’s schedule features remaining key matchups such as home games against Auburn, Ole Miss and LSU. On the road they’ll face the likes of South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. Of course, the Red River Rivalry looms over both the Oklahoma and Texas football programs.
For now, the Sooners will turn their focus to the Owls for their matchup in Philadelphia. Kickoff is set for Noon ET and will air live on ESPN2. Oklahoma will begin SEC play against Auburn at home the following week.
