Coming off of a 24-17 victory against Auburn in Week 4, the Sooners had a bye this past week to reset. Unfortunately, it came with the news that Mateer was set to undergo surgery for an injury to his right hand.
Mateer had the operation on Thursday and is expected to miss at least three weeks. That leaves the Sooners without their best player as the Washington State transfer had thrown for 1,215 yards and six touchdowns to three interceptions while also rushing for 190 yards and five scores so far this season.

Michael Hawkins Jr. is expected to get the start in place of Mateer against Kent State. He started four games last season as a true freshman and finished the season with 783 yards passing and three touchdowns with two interceptions in addition to 204 yards rushing and a score.
“He’s done a great job just keeping his head down, proving his understanding of the offense and all the fundamentals of being a quarterback,” Sooners coach Brent Venables said of Hawkins. “Leadership as well, and just has put together a really good body of work over the last several months. He’s always had a great work ethic, and he’s always been really coachable. He’s hungry, he’s humble and ultra talented.”
Kent State enters having lost three straight games, most recently 66-10 against Florida State in Week 4. Like Oklahoma, the Golden Flashes had a bye this past week and should enter the contest well-rested.
This is just the second time in history that Oklahoma and Kent State have met in football. The Sooners won the only other previously meeting by a score of 33-3 in 2022 and will hope for similar result in this year’s contest.
