The rivalry between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears is one of the oldest and best rivalries in the NFL. A big part of what makes it such a great rivalry is the passion of both fanbases.

One of those passionate Packers fans is named Bill Port. He decided to apply for the defensive coordinator opening in Green Bay. So, he updated his resume and applied, only to be rejected. That probably wasn’t a surprise, but what was a surprise was that the rejection came with a handwritten letter from Mark Murphy.

Within the letter that Murphy wrote, he managed to take a shot at the Chicago Bears, suggesting they could use the fan’s help.

Murphy wrote, “Bill, Thanks so much for your cover letter and resume regarding our defensive coordinator position. While your fantasy football experience is impressive, I regret to inform you that we have decided to go in a different direction. I hear the Bears have an opening—you look to be a perfect fit for them. Thanks again.
Sincerely—Mark.”

Murphy has been the CEO and President of the Green Bay Packers since 2007. During that time, he’s helped lead the Packers to consistent success, including a Super Bowl victory. Over the years, he also clearly learned to always make sure to take a jab at the Chicago Bears at every opportunity.

Mark Murphy’s time in Green Bay will soon be at an end, though, with the respected executive getting ready to retire on July 13, 2025. It will be his 70th birthday. No replacement for Murphy has been has been announced at this time.

As for Bill Port, he apparently also applied for head coach ahead of Matt LaFleur landing the job, so next up is probably a position coach role. However, as he apparently asked for weekends off, he may need to become more flexible with his schedule in the future.

Jeff Hafley explains appeal of Packers DC job over being Boston College head coach

In the end, the Green Bay Packers hired Jeff Hafley to take over control of the defense. For Hafley, to take the job, he needed to step down as head coach of Boston College, a move he has since explained the appeal of making.

“Now, I’m also the general manager,” Hafley said. “And you’re trying to manage the cap that you don’t really know what the cap is. You’re fundraising. I mean, I want to coach football. I want to coach more defense this year than I did last year. And now, it’s just prioritizing — I gotta coach again, I miss it. I miss coaching DBs. But how am I going to do that?”
